TKE Blood Drive

With Halloween only a few days away, October 27 was a great day for Pi Delta to sponsor a Red Cross Blood drive.  The event was held at the UAB Recreation Center and started at 11am.  The event was scheduled to end at 4pm, but due to the huge line of donors, and with the help of the dedicated Red Cross staff, we were are able to stay for an extra 3 hours! The goal the brothers had for the event was to receive 35 units of blood, but as more and more donors came to show their support, the number grew to a very impressive 48 unites of blood!  Tekes, other UAB Greeks, UAB staff and other leaders on campus were among the donors.

The brothers would like to thank all who attended and made the event a success and, most importantly, thanks to Red Cross and their staff for giving us the opportunity to give back and save lives.

TKE Goes “Into The Streets”

This past Saturday, October 10, marked UAB’s biggest day of service, aptly named “Into the Streets”.  The event is hosted every semester by the Leadership and Service Council.  Volunteers meet at the Hill University Center and pick one of the variety of sites to serve at.  Work at the sights ranges from spending time with the elderly, to getting down and dirty in the mud and planting trees and bushes or cleaning the streets.

Just like every semester, the Pi Deltas were up bright and early to represent TKE at the event as site leaders and as volunteers. We chose to go to Birmingham’s Jackson Elementary School and split up in groups to collect trash from the surrounding area, do yard work to beautify the school, and sanitize the inside of the school. The sight leaders included Jason Hall, Tareq Fayyad, Andrew Cochran, and Julian Mitchell.

After the job was done the work hat put up, the volunteers were treated to lunch and the all-important free t-shirt at the UAB Mini-Park.  This semester’s Into the Streets was, once again, a great success. The Pi Delta Tekes would like to thank UAB and all the hard workers at the Leadership and Service Council for providing such a great opportunity for students to be productive and give back to the city of Birmingham. Looking forward to the next one!

Here are a few pictures from the event:

Tau Kappa Epsilon Works With Habitat for Humanity to make a Change in the Community.

Saturday January 31, the brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon seized a quick opportunity to work with Habitat for Humanity of Birmingham. The opportunity kind of came out of no where so we acted quick and rounded up 20 people to work on the project. We ended up going out to Leeds and working on a home there. I found it quite amazing how fast a project can be completed when everyone is motivated and working towards the same goal. Some people are partying every week, we’ll do that too, but we’re gonna focus more than ever on service to our community in the upcoming months. As usual, here are some photos.

Play Hard, Work Harder. TKE at Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

About 18 of us got up bright and early this MLK day around Noon. We awoke this early in order to go volunteer with the Leadership and Service council and their MLK Day of Service event. About 85 people in total came out and the work of  picking up trash and painting over graffiti was finished extremely fast. The event was a great success, and TKE enjoyed being a prt of it. Thanks go out to LSC, Weed and Seed, and Hands on Birmingham.
